State and Board of Health guidelines bring changes to summer camps.
In Plymouth, for over 80 years Camp Bournedale has hosted thousands of boys and girls for a Co-Ed day camp and an overnight boys summer camp. But this year, the year of COVID-19, the camp made changes to their schedule according to Public Health Director Karen Keane. Director Keane, says Bournedale is quite a large camp, and hosts foreign students:
“One of our larger camps that we have here in Plymouth is Camp Bournedale. They usually have thousands and thousands of children attend their camp every year. They’ve already cancelled their residential portion for 2020 because they have a lot of European and overseas children who come for the camp for weeks at a time.”
Keane says that schedule couldn’t be coordinated for obvious reasons, but the Camp is planning to have their summer day program and there are state guideline regarding that:
“Some of the things to think about for the Camp as we move forward, a way to safely pick up and drop off the children, they’ve cancelled all off-site travel, so no field trips. And the other big change is Massachusetts residents only.”
Arnie Gerson, owner of Camp Bournedale tells WATD that although it’s difficult to operate under the new restrictions, he will be adhering to them as required by the state and the Board of Health. And, he says, he looks forward to providing kids with a wonderful camp experience.
The Board of Health meets today via Zoom at 3PM.
