The Kingston Board of Selectmen and Town Administrator Tom Calter have agreed to part ways.
Calter signed a three-year contract with the town in 2018.
After meeting in executive session, the Board voted to accept his resignation. Selectman Jess Kramer recused herself from the vote.
Chairman Richard Arruda read a prepared statement on behalf of the Board.
“During these challenging times, serving as Town Administrator brings with it enormous professional challenges. Doing the job in one’s hometown can be deeply personal as well. After much consideration, Mr. Calter and the Board of Selectmen have mutually agreed to end their professional relationship,” Arruda read. “Accordingly, Mr. Calter has tendered his resignation effective today. On behalf of the Town of Kingston, the Board of Selectmen would like to thank Mr. Calter for his dedicated service to his hometown. Mr. Calter would like to offer his sincere thanks and appreciation to his extraordinary staff and the dedicated department heads who serve Kingston with pride and distinction.”
An investigation in January found that Calter and Kramer had violated town conduct policy after a heated argument at a town restaurant. The argument was over Calter’s performance evaluation.
Calter apologized after the incident, saying in a statement he accepted personal responsibility for his part. At the time, he looked forward to getting back to work with the full five-member board.
The Selectmen voted unanimously to appoint former Town Administrator Kevin Donovan to serve in an interim Town Administrator role.
