Hingham Police Chief Glenn Olsson Retires and Selectmen Discuss Flag Policy.
The town of Hingham has a new Police Chief after 40-year veteran Police Chief Glenn Olsson retired abruptly amid the current “thin blue line flag” controversy.
Deputy Police Chief David Jones was named the new Police Chief at this week’s meeting.
Hingham town administrator Tom Mayo read two announcements, one of the retirement of Chief Olsson, that it was not a surprise, and he had postponed his retirement to help the town during COVID-19.
The other announcement was regarding an email sent to Selectwoman Chair Mary Powers.
The board of selectmen also discussed the current flag policy and how they will move forward in creating or adjusting it.
Selectwoman Mary Power says there will be 4 steps to change the town’s flag policy.
Steps 3 and 4 for changing the flag policy will include getting feedback from town residents and reaching out to neighboring communities on how they handle flag flying and if they have adopted a policy as well.
The board of selectmen say they will make a decision on a new flag policy in the next 30-45 days.
