Our pet of the week this week is a Lionhead rabbit and boy is he cute!
With that adorable mane, Mack, the beautiful and robust Lionhead rabbit is in need of a special owner. Our friends at Scituate Animal Shelter say he is funny and dog like and he will follow you around! He’s an incredible athlete and would probably excel at rabbit agility (it’s a real thing!). He needs an experienced owner because his previous life left him with some behavior issues that the team at SAS are working on. He seems as though he might have been used to a cage in his past life because he tends to protect his “things” and when your hand is in front of his face he will lunge at you. If you reach to him from above to pat in between his ears, he loves it. Mack would do best in a home without other pets and with someone who is rabbit savvy and willing to give him the patience he needs to trust again. SAS recommends rabbits be kept in a baby-gated area with easily cleanable flooring. A cost effective and easy set up is to purchase a piece of cut vinyl flooring and then place a baby gate/Xpen around it. It will give the rabbit room to hop around and learn to use a litter box. Including a hay rack, water bottle, hanging bowl for pellets, litter box, fleece, and chew toys will make a happy space! Your rabbit will learn to use the litter box and can have time free roaming in the home, outside of the pen too. Rabbits need love and attention and we think Mack could be an incredible companion for the right person!
If you’re interested in adopting, please email a photo of where you intend to keep the rabbit to adopt@scituateanimalshelter.org. The team will email you back an application and basic information so you can be prepared to take home a rabbit to foster it to potentially adopt. There is a $100 adoption fee, which includes spay/neuter, nail trim, and exam – we will send you home with your rabbit’s paperwork, toys, bedding, and food.
