Brockton: Residents Rescue Man from Two-Alarm Fire

by | Sep 15, 2020 | News

The Brockton Fire Department says there were no injuries after a two-alarm fire at the St. Casimir Convent recovery home.

Two residents helped another man out of a second-floor window when the fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

Mario Carter and Mark Sullivan were among the residents who grabbed a ladder to help the man down. Sullivan works as a carpenter and had ladders stored at the rear of the property.

“He was screaming for help, it was very hot up there,” said Sullivan. “Me and Mario ran up, we could not get down the hall, there was just black smoke everywhere.”

A window was broken to get the man out. The Fire Department arrived on scene seconds after.

Brockton Fire Captain Robert Hendrigan says the men in the rescue were checked out by EMS, but were not transported to the hospital. There were no injuries at the scene.

“Engine Company 3 did an outstanding job. Everyone, it was a teamwork thing, they did an outstanding job. They were actually right around the corner, returning from another call at the time,” said Hendrigan. “Normally they wouldn’t be here first, because Engine Company 7 is closer. Because they were right around the corner, they just went right in.”

The Fire Department received three 911 calls reporting the fire. The Engine 3 crew ran upstairs with a hose and knocked down the blaze in minutes.

“Really good stop – one room,” said Hendrigan. “The fire started going down the hallway a little bit, but they knocked it right back into the room.”

The Red Cross is assisting the 23 residents who were displaced.
