The town of Duxbury is discussing their budget and how the COVID-19 pandemic has forced them to take a look at some potential lay-offs and cuts.
WATD’s David Cedrone has the story:
The board of selectmen discussed the FY 2022 budget for each town department that included a 1 percent increase across the board.
With COVID-19 restrictions some portions of town funds have been affected, especially Duxbury Beach funds the town has lost.
The board mentioned the school budget will be especially challenging and Duxbury could face a 2 1/2 override to help finance the schools.
Newly elected Selectwoman Amy McNabb suggested layoffs or pay changes for town employees, but would not like to see taxes being raised.
Selectman David Madigan handed the suggestion off to town manager Rene Read who says he has never experienced a town union that would agree on a pay cut and it would probably lead to layoffs in order to cut the budget.
The board of selectmen may decide to do a zero base budget and see what each department comes back with in regards to any increases that are needed.
