Sunday night, the Tolman MDA Telethon will hold its 44th annual party, but with some changes.
The event will be held live on Zoom starting at 8 p.m.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, an organization that helps people with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and other neuromuscular diseases.
“With the COVID virus, we were concerned about how we were going to put this event on, obviously we can’t have an in-person event, so we decided not to give up and to try and get creative,” said Hingham resident Jay Tolman, who has been organizing the event for over four decades.
He said they’ll have live entertainment, including comedians Dan Crohn, Shelley Gruenberg, and Amy Rubin. In addition, they have numerous raffle prizes. Anyone who donates is automatically entered for a chance to win a prize.
“We’ve got a good lineup of entertainment, people just getting together on Zoom,” said Tolman. “People can grab their favorite beverage, sit back, and enjoy some comedy.”
Tolman said with the COVID-19 pandemic, children and adults with neuromuscular disease face higher health risks and isolation. He says support is needed more than ever.
“Through the years we’ve been able to raise over $630,000 for the MDA, and the money stays locally here,” said Tolman. “It goes towards clinics, towards camps for the kids, and then a lot of money goes into research for finding cures to different neuromuscular diseases.”
This year’s goal was scaled back from past years, but they hope to raise $10,000.
