The second night of the Halifax Annual Town meeting has been continued to next week after a quorum was not met.
The meeting was held at the Kingston Collection two towns over, but only 84 residents were in attendance.
“If you don’t have a quorum — and our quorum is 100 people — then you can’t conduct business,” said Town Moderator Dennis Carman. “Tonight we fell a little bit short of that. Part of that was obviously was complicated by having to have it in Kingston, because this was the only available opportunity, in a reasonable amount of time. So, we moved it here to try to get the business conducted, but just fell short of the 100.”
The meeting started on Saturday at the Halifax Elementary School. The town’s operating budget was approved, and about 30 articles remain on the warrant.
The Elementary School was not available Thursday night, and with concerns due to COVID-19, the Kingston Collection provided the space that was needed.
Inside the former K1 Speed go-kart track, a socially-distant setup included a stage, ample space between chairs, and plenty of hand sanitizer.
“We don’t want to inconvenience anybody. The pandemic just makes us have to be creative and innovative in order to do it,” said Carman. “We got closer than we expected.”
The Halifax Town Meeting reconvenes next Tuesday (September 22) at 7:30 p.m. at the Elementary School.
