MA: The Right to Repair is Question One on November Ballot

Sep 9, 2020

‘The Right to Repair law’ is question 1 on the ballot and asks voters to decide whether or not vehicle repair data should be more or less accessible to owners and independent repair shops.

The Right To Repair Coalition, backed by the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers, says the proposal will allow telematic data used for diagnosing and repairs to be accessed by vehicle owners and repair shops instead of just manufacturers and dealerships.

The question states that beginning in 2022 manufacturers would be required to sell vehicles equipped with telematic systems with open data platforms which could be accessed through cell phone apps.

The Coalition For Safe and Secure Data, who is backed by vehicle manufacturers, oppose the initiative saying it could make repair data and car information available to hackers and pose a cybersecurity threat.

This updates a 2013 law when voters passed the right to repair law which required manufacturers to begin in 2018 selling diagnostic software to independent repair shops to access mechanical data.

A yes vote supports requiring manufacturers to make repair data accessible and a no vote opposes the initiative.
