The Town of Marshfield has been recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency after efforts to protect residents from losses caused by flooding.
Town Administrator Michael Maresco says Joe Rossi helped lead the charge with the National Flood Insurance Community Rating System in town. They were awarded a plaque from FEMA recognizing their efforts in CRS and flood plain management.
When Rossi joined the selectmen’s meeting, his screen name was Joe “Flood” Rossi.
“I can’t thank him enough, he’s been incredible,” said Maresco. “He’s worked with the Board Selectmen, he’s worked with the Town Planner. Because of all the efforts of everyone coming together, the savings went from five to 15 percent, which is absolutely phenomenal.”
Marshfield residents will save about $300,000 this year on flood insurance.
“I’m hearing from people that their premiums, for the first time ever, actually went down this year. It’s a great impact. Just for everybody listening, the impact will be felt on renewals on or after October 1st,” said Rossi. “For people asking, and we’ve gotten a lot of questions about how do people apply for the discount – they are automatically applying to NFIP policies in high-risk zones. That’s any ‘A’ or ‘V’ zone on renewals.”
He says he and Town Planner Greg Guimond were interviewed by FEMA.
“FEMA is actually using the work we did in Marshfield as a national best practice for CRS across the whole country,” said Rossi. “I think that just goes to the credit of everybody that helped do this.”
