Mayflower II will be illuminated through November.
The lights were turned on September 6th to commemorate the date the original Mayflower, after disastrous starts earlier in the year, finally departed for “Northern Virginia.” The late start blew the ship off course.
When its passengers arrived, without permission to start a colony here, half of them members of a separatist congregation, half not, they wrote and signed The Mayflower compact. It establishes the first European democracy in America.
