In Plymouth, the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gary Maestas tells the School Committee that his retirement begins next week. Maestas started serving Plymouth schools 21 years ago, and for the last 12 years has lead the district.
WATD’s Bobbi Clark has the story:
In October of 2019 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gary Maestas announced that he would be leaving and planned on doing that next month:
“A lot has happened since my announcement and I feel very comfortable that we have done all the things necessary to get school open. So, I feel comfortable of where we are right now and I decided, you know what, let the people that have been selected to take on these rolls, just take them on.”
And those selected, in addition to the new School Superintendent Chris Campbell, are a new Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, an Assistant Superintendent of Administration and a new Facilities Director.
Maestas began in Plymouth as head of technology services:
“And as I leave we see how technology has really allowed us to succeed in education during COVID-19 in ways that I have never have imagined 20 years ago.”
So what are Dr. Maestas goodbye words to the town?
“My goodbye words for Plymouth are just a few sentences because I came here, you know I’m the first minority superintendent in Plymouth and people always, always treated me with great respect. I’ve had my challenges and I’ve had times with different stakeholders of this community that we didn’t see eye to eye. At the close of the day I think that people understood that I was speaking for the children not for myself.”
