The Town of Hull has announced that they will be renting six generators over the winter months.
Town Manager Phil Lemnios released a letter saying he made a request to the Light Department to investigate renting temporary generators “in the event National Grid’s electric feed failed.”
Lemnios says the town had six town wide outages in 2020 because of “the poor condition of the National Grid lines that provides power to Hull.”
He says that in the event of an outage it would not be “feasible for the Town to operate a shelter and it is difficult for residents to find alternate shelter out of Town.”
The rental period will be from December 1 through March 31 and will cost roughly $850,000 and will be paid with money from the Light Department’s emergency fund.
Lemnios adds that they are “in the process of finalizing a legal filing to compel National Grid to replace the current line with one that is more robust and less susceptible to failure.”
He says they expect to file legal action shortly.
The system is described as being manually activated and that it will power on after approximately two hours and it will require a one hour period to power off when the line from Weymouth is ready to be restored.
