Kingston‘s library is taking a hard hit due to Covid-19 and is at risk for losing certification from the state.
Library director Mike Slawson told the board he is down to nearly half his staff, the children’s librarian-head of youth services position was cut, there is not enough help to just reshelf books and it is very busy with over 400 curbside pickups a week.
Slawson also says not being able to provide internet access to residents is a real issue.
Slawson says the Massachusetts Libraries Board of Library Commissioners or MBLC requires public libraries not be cut less than 5 percent on the budget and Kingston’s is much higher.
The board of selectmen made a motion for an article at next town meeting that will potentially hire four positions including a children’s librarian, a library tech and to reopen the libraries doors to the public on a limited basis.
