In Plymouth, Brook Road is a short road, a little over 4,000 ft in length, with a long history. It’s the original road from Plymouth to Manomet, before State Road took its place. On it, there’s a bridge that’s about 150 years old. The town wants to replace it and some of the residents are not happy about this.
Bobbi Clark has more:
Selectman Betty Cavacco has been hearing from some of those residents.
“It’s a lot of land-taking for the residents around it and it just doesn’t suit that neighborhood.”
And those who have contacted her object:
“They don’t want it. They can leave it as it is, repair it, leave it one lane, keep the historical essence of it. Two lanes will make the place a speedway.”
But, says DPW Director Jonathan Beder, there are residents who are on board with the project:
“There’s been a lot of discussion on the easements and the abutters because we need more site distance. We need width to install the bridge to the proper width. Most of the homeowners—at this point we have we spoken to 4 out of 7 of them actually—and they are on board; they understand the project and benefits and the merits of it.”
Brook Road is a two-way street with a one-way bridge:
“We are looking to replace the bridge with a two lane bridge with a sidewalk—and that’s a requirement of MassDOT—we have a five hundred thousand dollar grant from MassDOT.”
A public hearing on the matter is scheduled via Zoom on Tuesday, January 12th at 5 PM.
