The Town of Hingham is one of 115 organizations approved to administer a COVID-19 vaccine in the first phase of the state’s rollout.
Town Administrator Tom Mayo says last week, first responders in town started receiving the Moderna vaccine. That group included the police and fire departments, and 911 dispatchers.
Fire Department paramedics administered the vaccine during a clinic held at the Senior Center.
“The COVID-19 vaccination is not available to the general public at this time, however our vaccine planning group is applying for state authorization to allow the town to operate a clinical site for additional groups of Phase 1 of the state’s rollout plan,” said Mayo. “Such as health care workers providing non-COVID-facing care.”
Mayo says the town remains in the red designation for COVID-19 infection rates.
Citing Department of Public Health data, there have been 238 new cases in town over the past 14 days. Since March, there have been 1,133 cases in town.
“We’re also following the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency’s incident management framework to expand our vaccine planning group and bring in additional trained staff to plan and coordinate larger-scale vaccine clinics, should we be authorized by the state to move forward,” said Mayo.
It’s expected the general public will be able to receive the vaccine between April and June.
