A timely warning from a police officer is credited with preventing injuries at a Whitman construction site.
Whitman Police say that at approximately 11:40 a.m. Tuesday three officers were working a road detail in the area of 244 South Ave. (Route 27) where a National Grid work crew was working in a trench.
Officer Christopher Lee was stopping the westbound traffic when he saw a male party slumped over the wheel of an approaching gray Honda CRV.
When Officer Lee approached the vehicle it moved forward, almost striking him, and headed directly towards the trench that the National Grid crew was working in.
He quickly alerted the crew of the approaching vehicle, allowing the workers to escape before the vehicle drove into the trench.
Police say it’s believed that the male inside the vehicle had suffered a medical emergency before driving through the work site and into the trench, ultimately crashing into a front end loader on scene.
No injuries were reported by any of the workers or officers on scene at the time of the crash and the driver was transported to a local hospital by Whitman Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
