After a year apart due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Friends of Marshfield Dog Park met in-person to discuss plans for the opening of the park.

Founder and President Steve Darcy says the project on Commerce Way has been three years in the making.

“It’s been great to get together, there’s so many visual cues that now signify the progress that we’re making,” said Darcy. “People were so excited to see the sign go up, indicating this is the future home of the Marshfield Dog Park. It’s been great to see each other too, it’s been over a year. We really couldn’t celebrate our victory at Town Meeting because of COVID.”

One more meeting with the Building Committee is scheduled to finalize plans and approve bid-ready construction documents.

A 2020 Town Meeting approved a land donation from VRT Corp. for the site of the dog park. Voters approved $50,000 in CPC funding for the project.

“We approached the Stanton Foundation, if they sign off on it, then we go out to bid,” said Darcy. “We’re hoping to go out to bid this summer.”

The Stanton Foundation awards grants to cover up to 90 percent of costs to build a dog park – up to $250,000.

The Friends of the Dog Park are targeting a fall opening date – but some challenges do remain.

“The construction market is red-hot right now, which is not working in our favor,” said Darcy. “The architect had a great presentation. We talked about how steel is about two to three times its historical average right now. Same thing with plywood, 2×4’s, lumber, all that stuff. The cost of materials for construction is just going through the roof.”

Darcy said if bids are too high, they’ll pause the process and go out to bid at a later date.

With coronavirus restrictions lifting, events and fundraisers are being planned for this summer.

“We’re looking for donations for benches, trees, we have a couple of good folks who have reached out to us already. Folks have volunteered to help us hook up the water fountains as well. Any materials that people can think of,” said Darcy. “We’re going to do a buy-a-brick program, a little memory lane around the pavilion. It’s going to take a lot to beautify the park.”
