Another milestone has been reached for the Marshfield Police station project, which is currently on track for a May 2022 completion date.
A “topping off” ceremony was held at the site, which marks the last piece of steel that was lowered into place.
Police Chief Phil Tavares says this project has been 34 years in the making.
“We’ve been trying to do something about our current facility and the problems that we’ve had here. I just can’t thank the citizens of Marshfield enough,” said Tavares. “They really stepped up, especially during a difficult economic time. They voted for this facility. It’s for the community, it’s for us, it’s for the prisoners, it’s for the citizens. We’re looking forward to it, and we can’t thank everyone enough for all their support. We’re truly lucky here in the town of Marshfield.”
The current police station was built in 1958, and is currently plagued by flooding, electrical issues, and hazardous materials.
In 2019, special town meeting voters approved a nearly $50 million dollar debt exclusion for a new station, DPW facility, and senior center.
Town Administrator Michael Maresco says this was a community effort. He said the town saved $13.5 million dollars due to the timing of the projects.
“The community understood. We usually take a conservative approach to spending money. But people that knew what the DPW conditions were for their employees, people that have visited the police station and saw the conditions they had to work in,” said Maresco. “We had a 21st century police department with 19th century technology. The building just didn’t have the bandwidth to be able to accommodate. It wasn’t built for the men and women that are serving us today in the public safety industry.”
