Braintree Police Chief Mark Dubois says a closed memorial service will take place at Gillette Stadium for fallen Braintree Police K-9 Kitt.
Kitt, a Belgian Malinois, was shot and killed earlier this month after police responded to a domestic violence incident.
In what was described as an ambush, police say Kitt continued to charge towards the suspect, causing him to turn his attention away from responding Officers William Cushing, Jr. and Matthew Donoghue, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The suspect, 34-year-old Andrew Homen, was shot and killed by police.
Kitt was born in Slovakia in 2009. The Braintree Police Working Dog Foundation purchased him in 2010 and he was assigned to Cushing. Kitt specialized in tracking, building searches, locating missing individuals, and evidence searches. He was a member of the Metro-LEC SWAT team.
In 2016, Kitt was awarded the Braintree Police Medal of Valor for protecting officers during an armed confrontation. In July of 2020, Kitt and Cushing located a suspect in a swamp after a shooting at the South Shore Plaza.
The memorial service takes place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Gillette Stadium. The service will be limited to public safety personnel and invited guests.
Braintree Police say donation pages have been established for the Braintree Police Officers Support Fund and in memory of Kitt.
