In Plymouth, a ban prohibiting the sale of Nips, a topic of discussion at the Select Board meeting this week.

Town Manager Melissa Arrighi says this is a subject that has been raised on a regular basis….
“…from groups such as Sustainable Plymouth, Friends of Open Space—they’ve brought that up over the years, that as they try and help us clean up the town, Nips are something they see everywhere. It has also come up from the Select Board members, both individually and collectively, that a ban on Nips may be something that Plymouth wants to consider.”
Influential in Arrighi’s decision to hold an article for town meeting is information she received from KP Law, a firm specializing in municipal law.
“We received some information from KP Law that a few other communities are adopting this ban and it is being upheld at the Attorney General’s office on any type of challenge. So I took the liberty of updating the Select Board in my town manager’s report that we’re holding an article at the fall town meeting to consider a similar ban here in Plymouth.”
Also noted in Arrighi’s report is that in 2019, Chelsea approved a ban prohibiting the sale of Nips, and in June 2020, Falmouth town meeting approved a bylaw to the same effect. In March, the Attorney General’s Municipal Law Unit approved the bylaw, finding it not preempted by, or inconsistent with state law.
