The Plymouth Fire Department says a woman was killed after a single-vehicle crash on Route 3 Southbound.
Fire Chief Ed Bradley spoke with WATD’s Christine James about the incident.
Bradley said the female operator of the vehicle was the lone occupant. Numerous 9-1-1 calls reported the crash just before the Jordan Road bridge around 12:50 p.m.
He said the vehicle was upside down in the Eel River.
“Plymouth Police also arrived out there – the first Plymouth Police officer that arrived on scene said that they needed all hands, as much help as they could get right away,” Bradley told WATD. “Anyone in the area did head out that way.”
Plymouth Engine 1, Rescue 1, and Paramedic units 3 and 5 responded to the scene. Plymouth and State Police responded as well.
The rescue unit has specialized equipment for that type of call. The State Police called Bucklers Towing for a large crane to remove the vehicle from the river.
“You can hear it in their voice, when the officers arrived to the scene,” said Bradley. “What they were trying to do was lift the car enough or roll it enough so that they could get the passenger compartment out of the water, hoping to save and get somebody out of the vehicle.”
The lone occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
The left travel lane of Route 3 Southbound was closed due to the crash, which remains under investigation.
