A community event was organized in Braintree to show support for the Police Department after a police K-9 was killed and two officers were wounded in a gunfight by a suspect.
K-9 Kitt was a 12-year veteran of the department. Officers of six and 10 years were shot multiple times after responding to a domestic violence call on Friday. The officers are expected to survive.
Sean Powers organized the Shine Braintree Blue event at Town Hall.
“I think it’s important that they know that there are thousands of people in our community that support them, that appreciate what they do. Our police officers are some of the finest people you’ll ever meet,” said Powers. “They would do anything to keep us safe. We are all just incredibly grateful for their willingness to serve us and sacrifice on behalf of us.”
Powers said hundreds of people turned out to show support last night, signing posters and cards for the department.
“It was just an incredible show of support from all walks of life, young, old. We even had folks that didn’t live in Braintree come from neighboring towns,” said Powers. “The loss of K-9 Kitt is just something that is irreplaceable. He was a valuable resource to our community that did an incredible job of keeping our town safe.”
A similar event was organized four years ago after Officer Donald Delaney was shot by a suspect at the former Motel 6.
Powers says more fundraisers will be planned in the future. He was asked how people can get involved.
“I think just, dropping off a card of thanks. Those officers see those cards, they read those messages. Taking the time to stop by the station, whether it’s in Braintree or whatever hometown that you live in,” said Powers. “Just let those officers know that you support them, that you appreciate them, and you value their service and sacrifice. A simple thank you goes a very long way.”
A support fund has been created on Go Fund Me by the Braintree Police Officers Association to help the officers impacted by the shooting.
