The Carver Fire Department says there were no injuries after a “difficult fire” at a home on Plymouth Street.

Fire Chief Craig Weston said a homeowner across the street called to report the fire around 12:45 Sunday afternoon.

Arriving crews found heavy fire coming from the front and side of the home.

“We had initial reports that the homeowners could still be inside the structure, so firefighters immediately went into a search and rescue mode. Due to the heavy fire conditions, they couldn’t make entry to the second floor,” said Weston. “Later on in the fire, the homeowners did show up on the scene, declaring they still had a cat in the structure. They obviously weren’t home. We did find the cat later on. It escaped outside with some burns, but was alive.”

Companies from Middleboro and Plymouth responded to the scene. Kingston provided station coverage. There were about 50 firefighters on scene, requiring extensive rehab due to high heat and humidity.

“It was well-involved. The initial engine company made an exterior attack while an engine company and two tankers from the town of Carver and one tanker from the town of Plympton established a water supply from a nearby cranberry bog,” said Weston. “They shuttled in about 36,000 gallons of water into the incident.”

Crews were on scene for more than two hours. Weston said this was a difficult fire due to the wooden shiplap construction of the home.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental at this time, but the State Fire Marshall’s Office is continuing to investigate.

Family members and the Carver Fire Department will assist the two residents who were displaced by the fire.
