Plymouth Fire Chief to Pass the Torch to Deputy Chief Neil Foley

In Plymouth, Fire Chief Ed Bradley’s days are numbered. He has about 248 days to retirement.

The Chief was actually due to retire on April 30th of 2020, but by special act of the state legislature in 2019, the Governor extended his stay for two years. The hope was that a new chief would be found during that time and that has happened.

Bobbi Clark has more…

Fire Chief Ed Bradley:

“My job was, on top of being the Fire Chief and being in charge of the Fire Department, to put a succession plan in place and have it laid out prior to myself leaving, so everyone knew who was going to be moving up,” said Bradley.

Bradley was successful in getting people to sign up to take the Chief’s exam.

“We just recently had a Deputy Chief’s exam, and again, we have people who’ve passed that exam. We also have a standing list for Battalion Chief for promotions, and for Lieutenants and for Captains,” said Bradley. “So, there’s a list sitting on the desk ready to use to promote people to fill these positions immediately upon their vacancy.”

So who will take over as Chief when Bradley retires next April?

“One of my Deputy Chiefs—Deputy Chief Neil Foley—he got the top marks for the fire chiefs exam,” said Bradley.

Foley transferred to Plymouth from the Hingham Fire Department.

“When he was in Hingham, he had the rank of lieutenant. When he transferred here he had to demote himself to firefighter and start that process all over again,” said Bradley. “I thought that was quite a feat to do that.”
