Rockland Police say Suspect in Custody after Multi-Town Chase

by | Aug 13, 2021 | News

Rockland Police Chief John Llewellyn says one man is in custody after a multi-town pursuit.

Llewellyn said the man was wanted for a parole violation out of Taunton. Rockland Police tried to use stop sticks, but the suspect drove into an industrial park in Rockland on the Route 139 town line. After about 20 minutes, the man was taken into custody. He may have ingested drugs, and was transported to South Shore Hospital as a precaution.

State Police identified the suspect as 47-year-old Giovanni Acevedo, of Woburn. He was wanted for six outstanding warrants. Earlier today, members of the State Police Violent Fugitives Apprehension Section had information that Acevedo was at a home in Taunton. State Police, Taunton Police, and state parole officers responded to that address.

Acevedo was located in the driver’s seat of a Mercedes sedan, which took off from the home. Police say he drove over the front lawn and bushes, nearly striking officers.

Troopers began following the vehicle on Route 495 Southbound, but were not in active pursuit. A pursuit was later authorized, and the vehicle exited onto Route 24 Northbound, then onto Route 104 in Bridgewater. State Police say the vehicle entered a Home Depot parking lot, and returned to Route 24 Southbound, at that point cruisers lost sight of the vehicle.

Raynham Police located the suspect 20 minutes later, and started a pursuit, which continued back into Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, and Hanson.

Acevedo evaded officers, and the vehicle was located about 30 minutes later on Route 53 in Pembroke, and an unmarked State Police cruiser followed it to Route 139 in Hanover. The cruiser was not in active pursuit. The State Police Air Wing arrived over the scene and observed the vehicles.

Hanover Police began pursuit, and Rockland police officers laid down stop sticks by the town line. Acevedo attempted to avoid the sticks, which disabled his vehicle near Route 139 and Bishop Lane in Rockland.

Acevedo refused to exit the vehicle, and a perimeter was set up. Route 139 was closed to traffic in the area. After 20 minutes, he was taken into custody.

Acevedo will be booked on the warrants, and he faces additional charges from the pursuits.
