A West Bridgewater farming family has earned a trophy and recognition for prize-winning tomatoes.
Lynn Reading and her husband, Pete, run C & C Reading Farm, in West Bridgewater. This year, they won second place in the “heaviest” tomato category of the 2021 Massachusetts Tomato Contest.
“If I didn’t have his expertise — he’s excellent at what he does, my husband Farmer Pete, we wouldn’t have the product that we have,” said Lynn Reading.
They purchased the 74-acre farm at 175 East Center Street in 2014.
The contest takes entries from across the state. The C&C Reading entry weighed just under 2.5 pounds.
“My husband and my husband’s family side are three-generation farmers,” said Reading. “The farm actually originated in Pembroke.”
Reading says they’ve won many ribbons over the years at the Marshfield Fair, but this is their second trophy in the statewide contest.
Last year’s contest was cancelled, but the year before, C & C Reading won first place for “slicing” tomato.
“We’re proud of what we do, we’re proud of our product,” said Reading. “It’s safe, healthy, and local. We soil test, we water test. I think you can’t go wrong. A lot of our prices are even cheaper than the supermarket.”
