The Abington Fire Department and surrounding towns responded to a fire at Union Point, the old South Weymouth Naval Air Station.
Abington Deputy Fire Chief Jack Glynn says crews were dispatched around 7:57 p.m.
“We initially dispatched, we weren’t sure what type of fire it was. If it was a brush fire or a structure fire,” said Glynn. “We dispatched with a brush truck and an engine. Weymouth got on scene first, we arrived very quickly thereafter with Rockland Fire.”
Glynn says this was a very difficult fire, but there were no injuries.
“It was a wooden structure approximately 25 feet deep by 50 feet wide, it was directly next to one of the old air traffic control towers. It was difficult in the fact of the location, it was deep-set, in the back of the Union Point property,” said Glynn. “There were no active hydrants back there, so we had to shuttle tanks of water to extinguish the fire. It made it very time-consuming and labor-intensive.”
Crews cleared the scene around 10:45 p.m. Abington and Weymouth fire departments inspected the scene this morning.
The cause of the fire is unfounded at this time, but remains under investigation.
