In Plymouth, Selectmen approved a new precinct map which was redrawn based on the latest federal census, so the town jumps from 15 precincts to 18.
This could result in a significant increase in town meeting members and the Charter Commission is taking note of that.
Bobbi Clark has more:
Bill Abbott Chairs the Charter Commission:
“The number of town meeting members would go from 135 to 162, but it doesn’t have to work that way. And I think what makes more sense is for us to first establish the ideal number of town meeting members, and that stays constant no matter how many precincts you have. So many towns are doing it that way and it makes a lot of sense.”
Concerning the new charter, Abbott says, expect dramatic change:
“Whatever charter we produce, will be a dramatic change from what we have now—whether to keep town meeting or not, we’ve been examining, right now 30 charters of towns most like Plymouth in the state to get ideas from other town charters.”
Abbott says the Commission has finished that process and…
“…we invited in officials from some other towns too, to give us their thoughts on how their town government is working. We’re going to listen to all three types of government, town meeting, mayor and council.”
The next meeting of the Charter Commission is Monday evening, November 29th at town hall.
