The Marshfield Veterans home on Ocean Street is nearing completion, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for Veterans Day.

A three-alarm fire damaged the home in February, at the time, it was five weeks from opening.

WATD joined Marshfield Director of Veterans’ Services Carin Paulette on a recent tour of the site, which will provide housing for eight homeless and at-risk veterans.

“Having a space to call your own, and then being a part of a community like Marshfield – the community is really excited to be a part of this movement, it makes me happy that we are one of the few towns to say we are contributing to ending veteran homelessness. We’re doing something about it,” said Paulette. “There’s a lot of groups in town here that are here to help veterans, including our office. They might find themselves not just in a home, but part of a veteran family, a community, which will motivate them to live a happy life.”

The town is partnering with NeighborWorks Housing solutions on the project, which is the Old South Grammar School and Hancock paints Building on Ocean Street.

Lisa Potts, the Assistant Veterans Service Officer, says the home includes a patio, common cooking area, and even space for services. They’ll share space with the Marshfield Historical Commission as well.

“I love that there’s individual units, that they each have a different space. Every single unit is spaced out differently. It’s not all like a cookie cutter kind of place,” said Potts. “The windows are gorgeous, they’re floor-to-ceiling in most units. You can feel the love that went into it. They’re going to be so happy here.”

Smoke and heat damage was extensive through the building. They’re optimistic for a December move-in date, but that may be pushed to January.

“In addition to the actual building itself and that project, I’m so excited to see and hear how the town comes together and wants to be a part of that. They feel invested in this home and I think it just brings Marshfield closer together as a community,” said Paulette. “People were calling us during COVID, ‘what can we do for this veterans home? What can we do to make it go faster? What can we do to make sure they have everything they need?’ In addition to the home itself like Lisa was saying, just the comradery and the togetherness of the town itself was just amazing to see for us.”

In Marshfield, the Veterans Day parade starts on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. from the Library Plaza, to the Veterans Memorial Park.

A ribbon-cutting for the new veterans home will take place up the street at 2033 Ocean Street after the ceremony.

“People are going to have their own space, and something they haven’t had in a really long time,” said Potts. “They’re going to be proud of it. It’s home, it’s going to be really nice for them.”
