Weymouth Fire Department Lieutenant Jay Bailey says being a firefighter is the only job he ever wants.
With that job, first responders often see the best and worst of humanity. They carry trauma with them, and it can impact job performance and an overall outlook on life.
The Weymouth Firefighters Local 1616 launched the “Heroes Need Heroes Too” campaign to raise awareness about some of the issues first responders may face.
They highlight Senate Bill 1691 and House Bill 2726, both bills would allow emergency first responders who experience trauma on-duty to access disability benefits.
Bailey says the culture around PTSD and trauma response has improved, but there needs to be a better understanding and baseline.
