The City of Quincy observed the fifth night of Chanukah on Thursday with a Menorah lighting.
Rabbi Alfred Benjamin of Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills in Milton led the event in front of Quincy City Hall during a night that had a special historical significance.
He said an event like this also shows how people from all backgrounds can mark their own observances with the support of the larger community.
Rabbi Benjamin also explained the origins behind some of the items used during a Chanukah observance such as chocolate coins.
Along with some other foods that are associated with the holiday.
Rabbi Benjamin also thanked the city for changing the date for the first day of school so it won’t conflict with the start of Rosh Hashanah.
