In Randolph, a funeral procession will be held for a U.S. Army Veteran who died unexpectedly at the age of 71.
Kevin Cook, the Director of Veterans Services, says Charles Capen served from 1969 to 1971, during the Vietnam War.
Services will take place Wednesday morning, but Capen did not have immediate family members.
“Mr. Capen was probably not well-known in Randolph, but I’m sure people interacted with him, saw him at the Shaw’s, or other places. He was a veteran and a member of our community,” said Cook. “When there is no family, we will step up and replace the family, and make sure that he receives a proper burial. The citizens coming out and showing their respect is a great sign of how our community pulls together for our veterans.”
Cook says they’ve gotten a great response so far, especially from the police and fire departments, who will join the procession.
“We’re encouraging people to come out tomorrow morning between 8:15 and 8:30. There will be a short procession through the center of town from the Cartwright Funeral Home up to the war memorial by the library,” said Cook. “Then they’ll take a right turn there by the fire department and the high school, then proceeding back to the highway for an escort down to Bourne National.”
The Cartwright Funeral Home is located at 419 North Main Street, in Randolph. The library and memorial is located at 2 North Main Street.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
