The Pembroke Herring Fisheries Commission was planning a fisheries festival this weekend, but Superintendent Bill Boulter says those plans are on hold.
He says the commission has spent weekends cleaning streams to the North River. In the winter, they found a beaver dam across the herring brook.
He says other obstacles have been intentionally placed, including a stone wall that was built near 4 Winds Drive.
Recorded history of the fisheries dates back to 1717, but Marcus Hendricks, a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag and Nipmuc Tribes, says it dates back even further. He discusses efforts to collaborate and educate the public about herring.
