Peter Drummey, of the Massachusetts Historical Society says Memorial Day was initially known as “Decoration Day” right around the time of the Civil War.
Locally, Halifax had the first local monument dedicated to fallen soldiers. There’s also an interesting addition on the Kingston monument.
