After an extensive investigation, a Somerset landscaper has been indicted on charges that he schemed to steal more than $100,000 from customers.
Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz says a grand jury returned indictments charging 36-year-old Eli Rego on numerous counts, including Larceny by False Pretense, Identity Fraud, Failure to Provide Workers’ Compensation, and Money Laundering.
Over a number of years, Rego allegedly operated a landscaping business, where he’s accused of stealing from residents in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The indictments allege he’d fail to complete projects in a timely manner, or would extend projects to gain more money. He used the money to benefit himself, for luxury items and vacations.
He was accused of claiming to work for Atlantic Concrete, and accepted $31,000 dollars to build a new seawall on Kimball Beach Road in Hingham. He never started work on the project, claiming the town was blocking his efforts to start the project.
The scheme included residents in Whitman, West Bridgewater, Middleboro, and Plymouth.
If people feel they were personally victimized by Rego, Cruz said they should contact their local police department.
An arraignment will be scheduled in Superior Court at a later date.
