Members of the South Shore’s Congressional Delegation have weighed in on the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe vs. Wade.
Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley said “We will never stop fighting to affirm what we know is true: abortion care is a fundamental human right,” and went on to say “This decision is a devastating confirmation of what Black and brown reproductive justice organizers have been sounding the alarms about for years: this Court will stop at nothing to strip away our reproductive freedom.”
Congressman Stephen Lynch said that the “Supreme Court majority has unwisely resolved to place political ideology above its Constitutional role as the impartial arbiter of the law and a guardian of our Constitution,” he said it undermined the court’s legitimacy and it will “invite-and even compel-additional government interference into private healthcare decisions and threatens other core liberties derived from the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment.”
Congressman Bill Keating said “Make no mistake – this decision is not just an attack on abortion rights by an extremist Supreme Court majority – it is an attack on the autonomy of half of the population of the United States, an attack on their inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
The state’s two Senators have also responded to the ruling with our Senior Senator Elizabeth Warren speaking at the State House on Friday.
Senator Ed Markey said “If this extremist Court will dismantle something as fundamental as the right for an American to make decisions about their own body, then we are on a slippery slope to the undoing of other fundamental rights. But Congress can act. We can expand the Court and protect our rights.”
