The State Police Bomb squad responded to Pembroke, to help dispose of an antique signal flare that was found near a home.
Deputy Fire Chief Jim Shea spoke with WATD about the incident that took place on Tuesday.
“This gentleman was cleaning out his shed, I believe it was, at his home in Pembroke. He came across this old signal flare. The bomb techs believe it was from the 20’s or the 30’s. He put it on his motorcycle and drove it down to us, just to turn it in and find out a way to dispose of it,” said Shea. “We in turn, called the Bomb Squad folks to come out, because we weren’t sure what it was. They had their dog Nancy sniff it out. They determined it was a pretty dangerous item.”
The item was safely incinerated in a barrel at the Recycling Center.
The State Police say Trooper Michael Rockett responded with Nancy, a six-year-old yellow lab.
The item was made by the Coston Signal Company, which made flares for the Navy and the US Life-Saving Service (a precursor of the US Coast Guard).
“I like to tell folks, if you find something during your spring cleaning, just leave it and call us. We can come out and evaluate it,” said Shea. “If it’s something that doesn’t look safe, we can definitely call technicians to take a look at it.”
