In Plymouth, at the Select Board meeting of July 26th, Select Board member Harry Helm brought to the attention of the Board the fact that the County has signed the lease for the use of the Woodlot by Boston South Development.
The company’s development plan includes thoroughbred horse racing.
Bobbi Clark has more…
The signing of a lease that includes horse racing appears to ignore the fact that in May, voters overwhelmingly rejected such a use, says Helm.
“So they were effectively ignoring the referendum and they were ignoring the fact that on file with the Racing Commission is a letter from the Board of Selectmen in opposition to a race track in Plymouth.”
Influenced by these factors, Helm asked the Board to take action that included a meeting…
“…with the Board of Selectmen, the Town Manager, our counsel, a lawyer, and our three representatives, Susan Moran, Matt Muratore and Kathy LaNatra—that we all meet to discuss where we are, where we’re going.”
Helm made a motion to that effect, seconded by Board Chair Betty Cavacco, but the motion failed 3 to 2 with members Dick Quintal, Charlie Bletzer and
John Mahoney in opposition.
Board member Charlie Bletzer:
“The Select Board is against the horse racing. Our state delegation knows we’re against it—and they’re with us on that too. We all work together for the residents of Plymouth. And, my feeling was this; I didn’t want to involve town counsel and spend money—the Plymouth taxpayer’s money.”
The Select Board meets next on August 2nd at 6 p.m.
