In Plymouth, Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, was joined by state and local officials on the front lawn of Town Hall on Tuesday, to announce an award of over $16 million to 138 municipalities in the Shared Streets and Spaces Program.
Plymouth is one of those municipalities. Bobbi Clark has more…
Lt. Governor Polito says this program was born in 2020 as a response to the economic fallout of the COVID pandemic:
“With so many restrictions on businesses, we were trying to figure out how we could get more people to come out and use sidewalks, parking spaces, parking lots, in a better way for especially something like outdoor dining, and so we started the Shared Streets and Spaces Program.”
Polito says the program is to help communities solve specific issues:
“Like here in Plymouth they’re receiving $274,000 to address a congested school area.”
DPW Director Jonathan Beder:
“Some of these funds will go toward the new crosswalk at Nathaniel Morton, at the training green, which will provide some bump outs, and then a new crosswalk and signage. And additional funds will go towards message boards,” said Beder. “This is really the third round we’ve received from the Shared Streets Program with MassDOT. It’s really awesome. It’s really been able to help us in terms of other, and additional improvements that we ordinarily wouldn’t have done.”
