In Plymouth, if all goes as planned, folks will be seeing cruise ships in the harbor. American Cruise Lines vessels will be dockside for overnight stays, beginning next spring, according to Lea Fillson of See Plymouth and Stephen Cole of The Plymouth Foundation.
WATD’s Bobbi Clark has more.
Lea Filson, President and CEO of See Plymouth, says American
Cruise Lines is negotiating with the Town of Plymouth.
“…and a contract will given to the Board of Selectmen on the 10th to look at. This could mean wonderful things for our tourism industry. It means that almost every week during the summer season, we’ll have a cruise ship coming in,” said Filson. “They hold 109 passengers; they easily fit in to the port.”
Plymouth Foundation Director Stephen Cole says discussions with American Cruise Lines occurred because of a connection between the Chair of the Harbor Committee and the cruise line company:
“Phil Chandler, the Harbor Committee Chairman, actually has a personal relationship with someone there and just casually mentioned that they should be coming to Plymouth. And upon further analysis and investigation, they agreed.”
The Connecticut based American Cruise lines runs a fleet of small ships up and down the east coast, and one of their ships was in New Bedford:
“We visited one of their ships based in New Bedford just a few weeks ago,” said Cole. “We had a wonderful time—got to see the accommodations. I think that a lot of folks will be very glad to see them here in Plymouth.”
