In Plymouth, on a 4 to 1 vote, the Select Board, at their meeting on Tuesday, extended Town Manager Derek Brindisi’s contract—a three-year contract that was put in place just last March. Board member John Mahoney cast the dissenting vote.
Bobbi Clark has more:
Board Chair Betty Cavacco:
“The contract that we signed in March is exactly the same as what is moving forward now,” said Cavacco. “It’s just that we extended that contract for three years with additional monies each year.”
According to the terms of the contract that was signed about six months ago, the Town Manager would be paid $230,000 in the first year and that salary increases to $241,000 in 2023 and $252,000 in 2024.
Cavacco says in extending the contract, the parties agreed…
“…to amend Section 2 by adding the following: from 3/14/25, to 3/13/26, his pay will be $262,000. From 3/14/26 to 3/13/27, it’ll be $273,000 and from 3/14/27 to 3/13/28, it will be $284,000.”
So, what is the purpose of doing this now?
“So, the Select Board decided that because of the strategic goals that we have implemented, that we wanted Derek to be the one that would lead those goals. So we were the ones that went to him and said we’d like to talk about extending your contract.”
Board member John Mahoney says his vote against the measure is…
“ …certainly not reflective of my feelings toward Town Manager Brindisi. He’s a very talented individual. My past precedent has been the evaluation of individuals after a year, and from there he would have had two years left to go on his contract and I would have had no problem extending that by a year—and if my arm was twisted—maybe two,” said Mahoney. “Therefore, I decided it was a little early in the game for him to get an extension, and I thought a three-year extension was rather large.”
