The Plympton Police and Fire Departments say they are monitoring a labor dispute at the Sysco Food Distribution plant.

In a joint release, Police Chief Matthew Ahl and Fire Chief Steve Silva say more than 300 Teamsters at Local 653 walked off the job just after midnight on Saturday.

Drivers and warehouse workers cite unfair wages, labor practices, and unsolved grievances.

Through a spokesperson, Sysco Boston released the following statement to WATD:

“Sysco Boston respects and cares about our associates and truly value the critical role they play every day. Our offer to Local 653 included substantial wage increases of 25% over the life of the contract and 7% in Year 1, while the Teamsters made NO wage demands during bargaining. We also offered more healthcare options at lower costs compared to their current plan. The Teamsters’ declared a strike without allowing our associates to vote on this offer.

The work stoppage at Sysco Boston is unnecessary and union leaders have taken this action with little regard for the damage it will cause to our associates and our customers. Sysco Boston is willing to continue to bargain to reach a resolution.”

Police say the individuals walking the picket line have been boisterous at times, but respectful of boundaries. The departments say there is no threat to public safety, and no injuries have been reported.

Multiple police and fire vehicles responded to the scene, and there will be a presence during the work stoppage. Drivers may experience heavier traffic on Spring Street near Route 44.
