A Hingham man was arraigned on charges in connection to a crash that resulted in one fatality, and serious injuries at the Derby Street Shops Apple Store.
Bradley Rein, 53, is charged with Motor Vehicle Homicide by Reckless Operation, and Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle. Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf in Hingham District Court.
Prosecutors say Monday morning, Rein drove a 2019 Toyota 4Runner SUV through the front window, causing serious injuries to 20 people.
Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz says 65-year-old Kevin Bradley, of New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Apple released a statement saying he was helping support recent construction at the store.
According to prosecutors, Rein told investigators he was at the Derby Street Shops Monday morning to get a lens in his eyeglasses replaced.
He said as his vehicle was traveling near the Barnes and Noble, his foot became stuck on the accelerator. He said his foot once got stuck in the past, while driving on the highway. He tried using his left foot to apply the brakes, but was unable to prevent the collision.
Witnesses told police they saw the vehicle traveling well over 60 miles per hour, and made no attempt to stop.
Prosecutors say Rein had a driving under the influence case from 2020 in Vermont, but that was expunged. There was no prior criminal history or mental health issues. He cooperated with investigators, and took a breath test at the Hingham Police station, reading 0.00%. More tests were conducted at South Shore Hospital.
At the arraignment, prosecutors said it was not known if Rein had a connection to Apple. He told police he was out of work, and formerly worked in the software and technology field.
Judge Heather Bradley set bail at $100,000, cash.
Rein is due back in court on December 22 for an assignment of counsel hearing.
