We have reached the quarterfinals, or the Elite 8 round of the MIAA football playoffs. The South Shore/Metro South entered the postseason with 26 teams competing for state titles. After one round of play, 14 teams remain.

Every South Shore team that enjoyed a home game on Friday defended their turf and advanced. Of the 13 lower seeded teams playing on the road, only one, Div. 6 13-seed Cardinal Spellman, advanced.

There were close calls, including Brockton losing on a goal-line interception to Methuen 37-34, and Pembroke falling despite Steve Johnson’s stellar day 24-21 to Foxboro. Ultimately, though, the Cardinals were the only team able to save the South Shore contingency from being halved in Round 1.

The second round will treat us with several marquee matchups, including Super Bowl favorite Milton squaring off with the reigning Div. 3 champs Marblehead, a 2021 Div. 6 Super Bowl rematch between Rockland and Abington, and a South Shore on South Shore battle between Duxbury and Middleboro.
