In Plymouth, a new charter will be on the ballot in May, and to help folks understand the changes that document would bring, if passed, the Plymouth Area League of Women Voters is holding a series of meetings throughout the community.
The meetings will be conducted by the League’s Observer Corp—a group monitoring the work of the elected Charter Commission since the Commissioners began their work two years ago.
WATD’s Bobbi Clark files this report.
Martha Vautrain, chairs the Observer Corp and says the group went to as many of the Charter Commission meetings as possible:
“At least one of us attended almost every single meeting and we made reports of those meetings that we shared with our League members,” said Vautrain. “And now, as a League, we are educating the citizens about the changes that have been proposed in the Charter that is currently the question on the ballot in May.”
And concerning that ballot question, Vautrain says:
“The League has decided to not take a position, yes or no, but we thought that it could be much more effective if we helped educate the citizens,” said Vautrain.
And in order to do that…
“We scheduled a series of meetings throughout town—various places, such as the Senior Center, Pinehills. We’ve managed to be in-demand, actually,” said Vautrain. “The precinct members are asking us to come to their caucus meetings and we are scheduling meetings throughout town as we are asked to do so.”
Full disclosure: Bobbi Clark is a member of the League of Women Voters.
