Matt Delaney of Pembroke has spent many years advocating for Right Whale Day in Massachusetts and that day was observed for the first time during a ceremony at the New England Aquarium on Monday.
Aquarium CEO Vikki Spruill said more action needs to be taken to protect this endangered species.
Among those in attendance was Rob Moir, of the Ocean River Institute, who outlined some steps that need to be taken to protect the Right Whale.
However, State Senator Su Moran said she wants to ensure that efforts to protect the Right Whales don’t cause unnecessary harm to the local lobster and fishing industry.
Right Whale Day was an effort spearheaded by Delaney after his family encountered a Right Whale during a relative’s funeral.
