In Abington, a male victim was pronounced dead after a collision between an MBTA Commuter rail train and a vehicle near the Railroad Street crossing.
Richard Sullivan, Superintendent of the MBTA Transit Police, says around 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, personnel responded to the area of Birch Street and Railroad Street in Abington.
Early investigation indicates “the grade crossing warning system was functional and operational” at the time of the collision.
The warning system was deployed and one vehicle stopped at the gate. Preliminary, Sullivan said another vehicle drove around the deployed gate/arm and onto the right of way, where that vehicle was struck by an inbound train.
The male operator was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained. No other injuries were reported.
There were about 12 people onboard the train, they were not injured.
The incident remains under investigation by Transit Police and the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.
