In Pembroke, a $61 million public safety buildings project moves forward to the Town Election Ballot.
At Tuesday’s Town Meeting, voters approved an article for the project with 215 “yes” votes, and 62 “no” votes.
The project would build a new Police and Fire Headquarters on Washington Street, and a sub-fire station on Monroe Street.
The fire station was built in 1976, and there’s concerns with asbestos and carcinogens in the facility.
Deputy Fire Chief Jim Shea was asked if the current station could be re-used. Audio is courtesy of PACTV.
The police station was built in 1978, and has limited space to offer services to residents.
Voters also approved an article to consider Pembroke joining the South Shore Regional Vocational School District.
A citizen’s petition article to reduce the requirements for a recall was approved with 108 “yes” votes,” and 91 “no” votes.
More than $7 million in capital projects were approved – including $2.5 million for water storage tank upgrades, $1 million in water main upgrades, and $600,000 in roadway repairs.
Town Manager Bill Chenard says roadway improvements will be an annual line item.
The Pembroke Special and Annual Town Meetings were completed in one night. All articles were approved on the warrants.
The Town Election is on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
