Work to Resume This Week on the Plymouth Water Street Sewer Interceptor Project

by | May 22, 2023 | News

In Plymouth, the Water Street project involving the relocation of a sewer interceptor from under the harbor to beneath Water Street has been on hold since early March due to construction delays.

An interceptor carries wastewater to a treatment facility, or another interceptor.

This is a $4.5 million project funded largely by American Rescue Plan Act or ARPA funds.

The project is necessary because the town needs access to the sewer interceptor pipe for monitoring and inspection. Town Manager Derek Brindisi reports that work is set to resume this week.

Bobbi Clark has more.

Town Manager Derek Brindisi:

“We paused the project because of the settlement issues that we experienced around March 7th and we’ve spent the better part of almost two and a half months working with a team of engineers to determine the best course of action to move forward,” said Brindisi.

Brindisi said the contractor Northern Construction.

“…has submitted a proposal for our engineers to review. It’s been reviewed and approved by our engineers and we’ve all deemed it now appropriate to move forward with the project. And, we plan to commence restart of the project on May 22nd. “

And new construction is planned to stop in June…

“…and then on June 17th, we’ll stop any new construction and then we’ll start to put the road back together—that will take anywhere from 5 to 10 days to put the road back together in preparation for our tourism season.”

The next phase is expected after Labor Day:

“We’re anticipating that, if things go well, that we’ll have about 50% of the project completed in and around June 17th, and that means, that we have to come back after Labor Day to complete the second half of the project.”
